There is a range of science equipments used in the laboratory for different purposes. Here are some of the basic science equipment and definitions that you should learn.

BEAKER

Definition: A large cup or glass with a wide mouth.

Conical flask

Definition:An Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask (BrE) or titration flask, is a type of laboratory flask which features a flat bottom, a conical body, and a cylindrical neck. It is named after the German chemist Emil Erlenmeyer (1825–1909), who created it in 1860.

Measuing cylinder

Definition:A graduated cylinder, measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. It has a narrow cylindrical shape. Each marked line on the graduated cylinder represents the amount of liquid that has been measured.

Bunsen Burner

Definition:a small adjustable gas burner used in laboratories as a source of heat.

Retort stand with bosshead and clamp

Definition:A retort stand, sometimes called a ring stand, is a piece of scientific equipment, to which clamps can be attached to hold test tubes and other equipment such as burettes which are most often used in titration experiments.

Filter funnel

Definition:A filter funnel is a laboratory funnel used for separating solids from liquids via the laboratory process of filtering. In order to achieve this, a cone-like shaped piece of filter paper is usually folded into a cone and placed within the funnel. The suspension of solid and liquid is then poured through the funnel.

Tripod stand

Definition:A laboratory tripod is a piece of three-legged equipment commonly used to conduct experiments in laboratories. It is used as a platform to hold and support glassware, such as beakers and flasks, during experiments and when the glassware is not in use.

Test tube

Definition:a thin glass tube closed at one end, used to hold small amounts of material for laboratory testing or experiments.

Stirring rod

Definition:A glass rod, stirring rod or stir rod is a piece of laboratory equipment used to mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes. They are usually made of solid glass, about the thickness and slightly longer than a drinking straw, with rounded ends.

Guaze mat

Definition:gauze mat (plural gauze mats) A piece of laboratory apparatus consisting of a flat piece of wire gauze placed on a tripod to give a beaker or flask additional support or to distribute heat more evenly.

Evaporating dish

Definition:Evaporating dishes are used to evaporate excess solvents – most commonly water – to produce a concentrated solution or a solid precipitate of the dissolved substance. Most are made of porcelain or borosilicate glass.

Watch glass

Definition:A watch glass is a circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a small amount of substance and as a cover for a beaker.

Thermometer

Definition:thermometer. noun. An instrument for measuring temperature, especially one having a graduated glass tube with a bulb containing a liquid, typically mercury or colored alcohol, that expands and rises in the tube as the temperature increases.

Test tube holder

Definition:A test tube holder is an apparatus designed to support and store test tubes during a scientific experiment. A test tube is a thin-glassed tube with one closed end used in the examination of cultures such as bacteria. Test tube holders may also be referred to as test tube racks.

Test tube rack

Definition:The test tube rack is an apparatus used in a laboratory to hold and transport test tubes during experiments or while examining cultures. They can also accommodate other lab tools, such as stirring rods and pipettes.

Spatula

Definition:It derives from the Latin word for a flat piece of wood or splint (a diminutive form of the Latin spatha, meaning broadsword), and hence can also refer to a tongue depressor. The words spade (digging tool) and spathe are similarly derived. The word spatula is known to have been used in English since 1525.

Metal tongs

Definition:Metal tongs are a science equipment used in the laboratory to hold hot substances.

Heat proof mat

Definition:A 'heatproof mat' is a piece of apparatus commonly used in tabletop lab experiments that involve moderate temperatures (for example, when a Bunsen burner is being used) to prevent damage to a work surface. They may also be used for domestic equipment, such as hair straighteners, hair dryers or other hot objects.
